Tryggvi was born in Iceland in 1956 as a duel national citizen, Icelandic-U.S, and is a former American military veteran and Icelandic seamen. Tryggvi demonstrated a talent for drawing at an early age and also later became a self-taught wood-sculptor in 1996. After discovering his talent for wood sculpting, he focused on the art styles of the Viking ages and specifically in the Dragon Art style to represent the genealogical heritage of his ancestors through his artistic abilities with wood.
Tryggvi has conducted numerous exhibits of his art in the U.S. and Canada which were sponsored by the California Alliance for the Arts and the U.S. National Endowments for the Arts. He has also provided a lecture on his work for Minnesota State University for the Northwest Art Center Lectures series along with TV interviews and numerous articles written about his work in the U.S., Canada and Iceland. Tryggvi has permanent public art installations at the U.S. Nordic Heritage Museum of Seattle WA, the Public Art Gallery of Gimli, MB Canada, the Hofsos Immigration Museum of Iceland and in the headquarters of the Icelandic National League of North America.
Tryggvi’s awards and honors for his heritage art including his donated arts works include judged competitions at U.S. Minot North Dakota’s, Norsk Hostfest, (America’ largest Scandinavian festival) 2012 Artist of the year award. He was selected as a team Iceland member in 2017 for the U.S. 27th annual International Snow Sculpture Championships in Breckenridge, Colorado.
